Granary WeevilLatin Name:
Sitophilus granarius

Appearance:
Chestnut brown or black. Unlike rice weevil, has no markings on its back. Adults vary widely in size, depending on the size of grain kernel infested.

Habit:
More common in northern states, they are resistant to cold weather and may hibernate in winter.

Diet:
Both larvae and adults feed on unmilled, whole grains such as oats, wheat, rye and barley. Occasionally infests beans and nuts.

Reproduction:
Female drills a hole in grain kernel, deposits an egg and seals it with a gelatinous plug. Each female may lay up to 250 eggs. Adults live an average of 7 to 8 months.

Other:
On leaving the grain, the adult leaves an irregular and easily visible hole in the seed coat.
