Order Chiroptera
Appearance:
The only winged mammal, there are over 40 species in the U.S.
Habit:
Roost in caves, hollow trees and other natural shelters. During the warm months,
can roost and breed in occupied buildings. Hibernate, generally outdoors, during
the winter.
Diet:
Primarily insects.
Reproduction:
Baby bats are born in June and July. Enter nursery colonies that can range from
a few to several hundred bats.
Other:
Blocking entry points is the best way to manage bats. In many areas, bats are a
protected species. While rabies is a concern, few bats actually carry the disease.
